What does it have to do with us?

The killing of Trayvon Martin has really upset me. I know I didn't know him, but it hit home. As the Dude grows up, it could have been him or any of his friends and that is why it hits home. I really try to never assume racism in someone's actions, but in this I see racism.

Why I see it as racism:

  • The perpetrator called 911 46 times in the last 15 months
  • He is quite a bit larger and older than the victim
  • He had a gun, Trayvon only had skittles and an iced tea
  • He reports the guy as suspicious because he is walking around and wearing a hooded shirt and is black
  • He says those mother%& always get away
  • He is told not to follow him, yet he doesn’t listen and pursues him
  • The cops sided with him, not the kid who was just shot
  • Witnesses heard screams for help, you can hear on the 911 tapes it is Trayvon

I really hope that one day soon justice is served for this young man and his family. I cannot imagine the pain they are going through, his mom losing a son, his brother losing his best friend and brother. All because he was walking in a neighborhood and some vigilante assumed ill intent by this innocent young man.

One day soon, my son will be out in this world and it scares me that people will assume he is up to no good simply because the color of his skin.

umm... so I probably shouldn't have read this at work! omgosh I don't know why but I never even considered that- J is black- this could be him one day! I mean, I find the whole thing to be so sad and confusing, but it never really got me until you said that it could have been the Dude. Crap!

Now I'm mad and sad. dangit... but thank you for pointing that out. Sometimes I have to laugh at how often I forget that J is black... although it's not so much that I forget, as it is that I just don't "see it". It's not what I think about when I think of him so I didn't make the connection.

The idea that someone could ever hurt sweet, cheerful, smart, smiley, overall wearing, and country music loving, who cares what color his skin is- J. :(

(btw, I've been meaning to email you the new DIY blog, but if you click on my comment it should come up in my profile.)

That's just it, the sad part is these cute, adorable, smiling, happy, wonderful kids we have will be those "suspicious" black boys one day. It is so hard to think about.
That is why we must all stand up for that poor kid that did not deserve to die and punish those George Zimmerman's of the world.

Well written, Carly. This whole thing has bothered me so much. It is devastating and heart-breaking. And destroys a piece of my soul every time I hear anything about it.

I am sorry that an incident like this has led you to have to think this way. I just wish stupid people would go away and the world wouldn't have to address their ignorance. But they won't and so we do. Sad, but true.

Thank you for openly sharing your thoughts on this.
